I suddenly have a craving for hambaagu, which isn’t hamburger, but Japanese-style Salisbury steak. I actually prefer this over “real” steak—blasphemous? It’s total comfort food, and like any good child who has a decent cook for a mother, I will naturally say my mother’s is the best. ;)
However, the best I’ve had in a restaurant is from Tsubame Grill in Japan, which has been around since 1930. The lunch set comes with a tomato farci salad and your choice of hamburg steak. I went for the Tsubame-style hamburg steak, which comes pipin’ hot, wrapped in tinfoil. Rip that sucker off and make sure you sop up all of the beef stew drizzled on top with the accompanying bread or rice. Don’t forget the bed of mushrooms hiding underneath your hamburg too.
