I OD’ed on street meat during sophomore year of college: after all, what doesn’t hit the spot when it’s cheap, tasty, spicy and filling to boot? (Although I must say it tastes ten times better when you’re drunk and hungry.) The perennial favorite is the famous one at 53rd and 6th, but that’s a bit far to travel when you’re around NYU. A constantly reliable neighborhood favorite is Sammy’s Halal Cart, an off-shoot of the Sammy’s located in Queens, which also won the Vendy Awards. Haven’t been here in nearly two years, but the combo platter was just as good as I remember it, and generous on the portions. Make sure to ask for extra hot sauce.
