New York is hitting a record 90 degrees today and I am craving some naengmyun like no other. The best mul naengmyun I’ve ever had is at Pyongyang Myeon-ok [평양면옥] in Kangnam-gu, Seoul, which offers up a limited but delicious menu of Pyongyang/North Korean-style specialties. Mul naengmyun in general seems to be meh in NYC, so I tend to get bibim naengmyun, its broth-less, spicy counterpart, instead.
This one was from last summer, at Woo Lae Oak, also in Kangnam-gu—which, unlike its trendy, fusion-esque counterpart in NYC (and I hear there’s one in LA too), is a straight-up regular Korean restaurant establishment with some great bulgogi and naengmyun.
Completely unfounded rumor: From what my dad tells me, there’s a rumor that each Woo Lae Oak location and décor is supposed to match each wife that the owner has been married to… Does that mean the one reppin’ NYC is a young hot thang?
